EpiTent Limited team’s flagship product is the Humane Emergency Use Canopy and Accessories (HEUCA). This is a prize winning and ground breaking tent originally designed for the Ebola Grand Challenge of 2015. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) partnered with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Defence to setup the Ebola grand challenge whose objective was to look for solutions that brought innovation to the caregiving setting for health workers operating directly in contact with Ebola patients. Emphasis was on four categories namely protective wear, work environment, communication methods and tools, and the diagnosis of disease. HEUCA was a finalist and grant winner in the work environment category. Once again, congratulations to the HEUCA team!
Working with a multi-disciplinary team of innovators at ResilientAfrica Network (RAN), a project under the Makerere University School of Public Health, and with support from USAID, we were able to come up with a cutting edge “Next Generation Tent“.
The tent offers passive cooling of over 7°C, a 95% improvement in airflow and a 90% reduction in social exclusion over existing structures
Today, based on consultation with The Design Impact Group from Dalberg, EpiTent Limited was formed to commercialise HEUCA and steer its further development. HEUCA evolved from just a prototype with three features into a modular system allowing for use of modern conveniences such as green power (solar energy, sockets and light fixtures). We are now able to customize the internal environment to suit all kinds of emergency medical scenarios such as consultation rooms, changing rooms and even surgical suites. Our system complies with the Infection Prevention and Control Protocol and we hope to certify it for level four environments. After a successful need finding visit to Guinea, EpiTent Limited continues to research ways of lowering the temperature even more, use cheaper, lighter and more readily available materials as well as looking for initial sales opportunities in order to give the product a market presence as well as give the innovators some experience in a heavy usage environment.
We provide Humane Emergency Use Canopies and Accessories for situations where there is an immediate or emergency need for portable temporary habitation solutions in places with high temperatures and humidity. Our solution is cooler than existing solutions, less humid and a lot more socially inclusive than any product in our space at similar or lower price using locally available and familiar technologies.
