About:
Makerere University School of Public Health - Resilient Africa Network (RAN) in collaboration
with AidData Center for Development Policy (AidData - USA); a Partner Development Lab under
the Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN) invite you to the 3rd Annual Hackathon that will
take place on Friday, 22nd July 2016 from 7:30am - 6:00pm at the RAN Innovation Space

innovators, Entrepreneurs, Designers, Social Scientists and students from different backgrounds to
co-create solutions to climate change and its impacts through cross-disciplinary collaboration and mentorship.
Problem:
Climate Change is expected to have a significant effect on the livelihoods of people
living in poor communities. Globally, seasons are shifting, temperatures are rising and sea
levels constantly fluctuating and climate change disasters such as landslides, floods,
disease epidemics, famine, drought, are increasing in frequency and severity. Significant
investments of development aid, government revenues and innovative interventions will be
necessary to reduce these negative effects and provide effective options to combat climate
change and its impacts on livelihoods. The objective of this hackathon is to use data and
other open geospatial data sources to explore climate change vulnerability and adaptability
and to develop novel solutions that will address climate change and its impacts.
Challenge:
Participants will be challenged to use geospatial data to develop maps, mobile applications,
visual aids and to leverage a variety of technological tools to create innovative solutions to
address climate change and its impacts. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to
hone their skills in innovative problem solving, geospatial research, program/policy design,
to contribute towards development. Join us and be part of the solution!
