The RAN team under the leadership ofProf. William Bazeyo, RAN Chief of Party and Lab Director joined a delegation from Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Parliament, of Uganda, Uganda Development Bank, National Planning Authority and Uganda Industrial Research Institute for the Global Sustainable Finance Conference in Germany. This conference guided by the theme ‘Financing Innovations for Sustainability” was held on July 13-14, 2017. Hon. Gabriel Adjedra, State Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development led Uganda’s delegation to the conference.
The annual Global Sustainable Finance Conference provides a platform to upscale awareness, and learn current issues in sustainable development and financing for sustainable development. The objective of the conference was to contribute to the sustainable transformation of the financial services industry towards achieving the global development agenda. The conference also has continued to provide an international forum to key stakeholders from across the world for sharing knowledge, and experiences while working together for strong, fair, safe and resilient economies. Conference participants also discussed how the financial services sector works in harmony with the natural environment. Additionally, the conference programme focused on discussions about:
- Financing Innovation for Sustainability,
- Latest development in financial inclusion and SME Finance,
- Large –scale project financing for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,
- Green and responsible investments, and
- Chatting the way forward and next actionable initiatives.
The event also witnessed the Karlsruhe Sustainable Finance Awards (Global Sustainable Finance Awards), directed towards honoring financial institutions and organizations with significant contributions to the field of sustainable finance. This multi-stakeholder gathering also provided an opportunity for participants to get to know peers and practitioners from around the globe who are committed to making the financial sector a reliable partner in achieving the SDGs.
To mark to a successful conference, an MOU will be signed as a basis for collaboration in aspects such as developing innovative and effective strategies and solutions for financing innovations. RAN is being looked at as a key player in supporting innovation development for sustainable development. Moving forth, from this conference, RAN will also continue providing Research and Development support to technology institutions and entrepreneurs in Uganda, Africa and the globe as need arises.
